Hello Carver Families!

 

This information is intended to keep parents updated on reminders, upcoming activities, and announcements during the school year. Be sure to check Carver's webpage for updated daily announcements. Please see below for announcements for this week:

 

1.       Carver 2020-2021 Yearbooks are on sale! Click here for the link to order a yearbook! You can also order yearbooks at yearbookforever.com (type in Carver, Springfield, MO).  Cost of a yearbook is $18.  

2.       The first day of 4^th quarter is March 22^nd! Third quarter grades are available online. Please spend a few minutes with your student to review 3^rd quarter grades and to check grades and assignments for 4^th quarter in each class. Follow these steps to check grades and assignments:

·       To check individual assignments and message teachers in Canvas:

·  Canvas is the platform our teachers and students use for all assignments. As a parent, you are automatically able to be an observer in each of your child’s Canvas courses with your own log-in and password. To find your child’s Canvas courses, log in to Canvas at www.sps.org > Click on “Parents” > Click on “Resources” > Click on “Canvas.” The log in for Canvas is the same as eschool home access log-in and password. If you are unable to log-in to Canvas or home access, please call the main office. We will be happy to assist you!

·  If you are unfamiliar with Canvas and would like quick tips on how to change preferences or contact a teacher through Canvas, click here for information.  

·  To view grades and assignments in Canvas, click on Grades on the left side of the Canvas page. The student’s overall grade will be shown on the top right and at the bottom. For accuracy, please only note the row labeled ‘Total Grade.’ If you have questions about the assignment or grade, Canvas offers a way to immediately contact the teacher through inbox.

·       To check overall grades in home access:

·  Grades for mid-quarter and final end-of-quarter grades can be easily located in home access. To check overall grades in eschool home access, please follow these steps:

·       Home Access Center website: https://homeaccess.sps.org/homeaccess

·       Log-in: Enter User Name and Password

o   If you have not previously logged on, you will be asked to create two questions with answers in case you forget your password in the future.

o   If you need your log-in and password, please come in or call the office.

·       Click on Classes for assignments and click on Grades for overall scores in each class at mid-quarter and at the end of the quarter.  

3.        Explore Summer School registration is now open for all students. Carver will host a summer school site this summer. The dates for summer sessions are June 7^th – 30^th and July 7^th – 30^th. Transportation deadline is April 15 for the first session. Click here to enroll for summer classes.

4.        Need after school care for your student? SPARC will be offering after school care and tutoring each seated school day until 6 pm in the Carver café. Click here for registration information.

5.        Click here to view the most recent episode from The GWC Student News Tech Force team. The students in the Tech Force Team applied to be part of the Tech Force team to assist the librarian, students, and teachers with technology needs. For 4^th quarter, the team will also create a news episode highlighting items around Carver. The GWC News will be available for student viewing on Cougar Voices Canvas page each Thursday.

6.        Voices from the Middle is now on sale! This book includes writing and artwork from middle school students across Springfield Public Schools, including some very talented artists and writers here at Carver! You can pre-order your copy for $10. The deadline to order is March 31. Books will be delivered in early May. Use this link to order your copy.

7.        Does Your Child Need Dental Care? The Tooth Truck is available for students to perform preventative cleanings and needed treatment for children qualifying for free/reduced school lunches (at no cost to the families). To participate, call the Carver Nurse at 523-6830 or complete the application form (click here for link) for your child to be seen while the Tooth Truck is on site at Carver.  

8.        Have a school issued Kajeet hotspot? As a reminder, SPS Kajeets must be renewed each month in the school library. Mrs. McGuane, Carver’s librarian, will send reminders through Canvas. Please have your child bring the device by the Carver library to renew the account each month. Kajeet accounts not renewed each month in the school library will be closed by the district and the company providing internet service may begin billing the home for continued use. If your student no longer needs the Kajeet device, have them return it to the school library. Fully virtual students may return their Kajeets to the office at our secured main entrance or contact the librarian with questions about renewal and due dates.

9.        Parents! Need help accessing and checking online learning with your student??? Click here for a list of resources from SPS. You can also click here for a guide created by our librarian for “how-to” items for parents.  Please be sure to reach out with questions about eschool or canvas. Ask your student to canvas inbox (email) his or her teachers and read the answers from the teacher together or email the teachers directly (teacher email list here)! Teachers are available via email or the librarian is willing to help via email, phone, or Instagram.

2.       The end of the quarter is March 12th! Please spend a few minutes with your student and check grades and assignments in each class. Follow these steps to check grades and assignments:

4.        Need an earlier drop-off time at Carver? Beginning Monday, February 8, Carver will open the café at 7:05 am for those students needing early drop-off. Students will enter the building through the main entrance and will be seated socially distanced in the café until 7:30 am. Adults from Carver will supervise students in the café. All individuals will be required to wear a mask. Students are not permitted to eat during this time from 7:05 am - 7:30 am. At 7:30 am, students will transition to the classroom for breakfast in the classroom. If you have additional questions, please contact the main office.

5.        Carver NJHS students are proud to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in their fight to cure cancer with a fundraiser through the Hero Squad community service-learning program. To learn more about LLS and their life-saving work, visit lls.org.  Carver’s NJHS Hero Squad Kick-Off started February 1, 2021. Please consider donating or participating as we work to raise money to cure cancer. The money our students raise will help blood cancer patients in our community by funding research, providing advocacy, financial and support services, and helping patients get access to quality, affordable, coordinated care.  To participate or donate online, please click here.

6.        Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year the district is unable to provide scoliosis screening of 6th grade girls and 8th grade boys. The district recommends regular check-ups and physicals through your child’s primary pediatrician. Please contact your child’s doctor with questions.

8.        March 8^th – 12^th is National School Breakfast Week. Studies show that children who eat school breakfast are more likely to: Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math, score higher on standardized tests, have better concentration and memory, and be more alert and maintain a healthy weight. This year breakfast at Carver is free for every student from 7:30 am – 7:55 am each day! Click here for the SPS breakfast menu.

9.        At the beginning of each semester, each family is encouraged to apply for Free and Reduced Price Meals. Click here to apply online. 11.     For our seated students working virtually on Wednesday: While school is in session for four days seated, Carver students will be following a compressed Wednesday virtual schedule. Teachers will be available to review the assignment and answer any questions during the class in the times listed below. Please have your student log into classes following this schedule:

8:00am-8:25am: 1^st period

8:30am-8:55am: 2^nd period

9:00am-9:25am: 2^nd period

9:30am-9:55am: RTI Intervention

10:00am-10:25am: 4^th period

10:30am-10:55am: 5^th period

11:00am-11:25am: 6^th period

11:30am-11:55am: 7^th period

12:00pm – 12:15pm: Teachers will be available for questions on Canvas.

12:15pm-12:45pm: LUNCH

12:45 pm – 3:15 pm: Students should complete assignments and missing work.

Teacher Professional Learning: 12:45–2 pm.

Teacher Plan Time: 2:00-3:00pm.

12.     SPS sporting events guidelines for Carver Middle School: While we welcome our families and fans support for our Carver student athletes, there are new COVID-19 expectations and guidelines for all spectators attending Carver sporting events. Due to COVID-19 and to provide space for social distancing, student sections have been closed until further notice. Students attending as fans must be seated with their parent or guardian during the game and wear a mask throughout the games.
