Carver Announcements for October 25, 2020

 

Hello Carver Families!

This information is intended to keep parents updated on reminders, upcoming activities, and announcements during the school year. Be sure to check Carver's webpage for updated daily announcements. Please see below for announcements for this week:

1.        Grade cards for first quarter will be live on October 30th. To see your child’s grade report for seated classes, please follow these steps on or after October 30th:

·       Home Access Center website: https://homeaccess.sps.org/homeaccess

·       Log-in: Enter User Name and Password

o   If you have not previously logged on, you will be asked to create two questions with answers in case you forget your password in the future.

o   If you need your log-in and password, please come in or call the office.

·       Click on Grades  

·       Click on Report Cards.

2.        SPS sporting events guidelines for Carver Middle School: While we welcome our families and fans support for our Carver student athletes, there are new COVID-19 expectations and guidelines for all spectators attending Carver sporting events. Due to COVID-19 and to provide space for social distancing, student sections have been closed until further notice. Students attending as fans must be seated with their parent or guardian during the game and wear a mask throughout the games. Please click here and review other COVID-19 spectator guidelines for attending Carver games.

3.        Second quarter starts October 26! Please be sure to check assignments, grades, and attendance online in eschool or Canvas each day for your student and talk with your student about each grade. Grades cards for first quarter will be available in HomeAccess on October 30.

·       To check individual assignments and message teachers in Canvas:

·  Canvas is the platform our teachers and students use for all assignments. As a parent, you are automatically able to be an observer in each of your child’s Canvas courses with your own log-in and password. To find your child’s Canvas courses, log in to Canvas at www.sps.org > Click on “Parents” > Click on “Resources” > Click on “Canvas.” The log in for Canvas is the same as eschool home access log-in and password. If you are unable to log-in to Canvas or home access, please call the main office. We will be happy to assist you!

·  If you are unfamiliar with Canvas and would like quick tips on how to change preferences or contact a teacher through Canvas, click here for information.  

·  To view grades and assignments in Canvas, click on Grades on the left side of the Canvas page. The student’s overall grade will be shown on the top right and at the bottom. For accuracy, please only note the row labeled ‘Total Grade.’ If you have questions about the assignment or grade, Canvas offers a way to immediately contact the teacher through inbox.

·       To check overall grades in home access:

·  Grades for mid-quarter and final end-of-quarter grades can be easily located in home access. To check overall grades in eschool home access, please follow these steps:

4.        Parent Conferences this year will be virtual. Please reach out through email (teacher email list here) or call the main office to schedule a virtual parent conference with your child’s teachers. Teachers will reach out via email and phone to schedule conference times.

5.        Please help us honor our veterans on Veteran’s Day! This year, Carver will hold a virtual Veteran’s Day Celebration on November 11th on our website to honor our veterans. If you have a family member in the military (past or present), please submit a picture for the celebration. To submit a photo, reply to this email attaching a copy or screenshot of the photo or send the photo to the office with the family member name, student name, and branch of the military. If you send the photo to the office, we will get the photo back to you after scanning it. Please be sure to label the photo or the envelope on the photo.

6.        Flu vaccine clinic at Carver on Nov 10 and Nov 13: Springfield Public Schools, in cooperation with Jordan Valley Community Health Center and with support from CoxHealth, Mercy, and the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, is offering the seasonal flu vaccine to any student free of charge, and will be available to both virtual and seated studentsFlu vaccine clinics will be held at Carver on Tuesday, November 10, and Friday, November 13, beginning at 8:15 am. Click here for information on the flu vaccine, on clinic information, and for consent forms. Students must have a signed consent form to participate in the clinic. Fully virtual students will enter the flu clinic at Door #4 (please follow the signs in the parking lot).

7.        Want to help support Carver Middle School?? Coach Angel in support with the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools have created a Pick-a-Project Fundraiser to purchase organizational cone markers to use in the gym. Click here for more information or to donate!

8.        ATTENTION 8th GRADE PARENTS: The 2021-2022 Transitional Transfer Request process will open for parents on November 2 at 7:30 am and will close on December 1 at 4:30 pm.  A Transitional Transfer Request allows students in 5th grade going into 6th grade, or students in 8th grade going into 9th grade, to select a middle or high school of their choice. Transitional Transfers must be submitted online during the window and will be available on Nov 2 at www.sps.org.

9.        Have a school issued Kajeet hotspot? As a reminder, all SPS Kajeets must be renewed each month in the school library. Mrs. McGuane, Carver’s librarian, will send reminders through Canvas. Please have your child bring the device by the Carver library to renew the account each month. Kajeet accounts not renewed each month in the school library will be closed by the district and the company providing internet service may begin billing the home for continued use. If your student no longer needs the Kajeet device, have them return it to the school library. Kajeet hotspots issued to Carver’s fully virtual students will not have monthly renewals and will only need to be renewed in January. 

10.     Carver teachers have created a virtual Open House Tour for parents! Check out the information on each slide for your child’s teachers to learn a little more about them! Click here for the link!

11.     SCHOOL PICTURE DAY RETAKES: CLICK HERE to order school pictures online at lifetouch.com and use the Picture ID Code: EVTSMK7QN. Lifetouch Photography retakes for Carver will be Friday, December 4, at 8:45 am or Tuesday, December 1, at 8:45 am.

12.     Have a library book still at home from any SPS library from 3rd or 4th quarters last year? You can return the book to Carver during morning or afternoon car lines or to the secure front entrance area and we will get it returned to our library or the correct SPS library!

13.     Beginning September 8, all students enrolled at Carver will be able to eat a school breakfast each morning for free and lunch each afternoon for free! Breakfast will be available each morning from 7:30 am - 7:55 am for each seated student in their 1st hour classroom. Breakfast will not be available after 7:55 am. Students attending school virtually can pick up food items during designated times in the carline. Click here for more information or check out nutrition services at SPS.org.

14.     The building will open at 7:30 am. Please have your student remain in the car with you until the building opens at 7:30 am. Do not drop your student off in the parking lot.

15.     For our students working virtually and seated: Please have them log into the chromebook to first hour on virtual days at 7:55 am and check the announcements for assignments from the teacher. Cohorts A-K and Cohorts L-Z students should follow this bell schedule when seated and on the three virtual days:

1st period: 7:55 am – 8:42 am  

2nd period: 8:45 am – 9:32 am

3rd period: 9:35 am – 10:22 am

RTI Intervention: 10:25 am - 11:00 am

4th period: 11:03 am – 12:25 pm (30-min lunch included)

5th period: 12:28 pm – 1:15 pm      

6th period: 1:18 pm – 2:05 pm

7th period: 2:08 pm – 2:55 pm

16.     Parents! Need help accessing and checking online learning with your student??? Click here for a list of resources from SPS. You can also click here for a guide created by our librarian for “how-to” items for parents.  Please be sure to reach out with questions as we navigate online learning. Ask your student to canvas inbox (email) his or her teachers and read the answers from the teacher together or email the teachers directly (teacher email list here)! Teachers are available via email or the librarian is willing to help via email, phone, or Instagram. At Carver, we want you to know we are in this together and we want to help you and your child during this virtual learning experience at home. 

17.     We want virtual learning to be successful! Please reach out to your child’s teachers for questions on learning or assignments. 1.        The end of first quarter is October 22! Please be sure to check assignments, grades, and attendance online in eschool or Canvas each day for your student and talk with your student about each grade. Grades will be finalized on October 23.

Students coming into the building must wear a mask.)

·  Retakes for Cohort L-Z are Friday, December 4, at 8:45 am. 

·       Tuesday, October 20, for seated students in Cohort A-K. (For our fully virtual students with last names A-K, picture times are from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm on Oct 20. When you arrive, please park in the bus lane and use the WEST door #4 on the far west side of the parking lot. Someone will greet your student at door #4. Parents will need to wait in the car. Students coming into the building must wear a mask.)

9.        On October 22 from 7 pm – 8 pm, the Springfield-Greene County Public Library will host a free virtual webinar to any caregiver or parent of a child in grades K – 12. The webinar will focus on tips to make home-based learning successful and will highlight all resources available for students and families at the public library. Click here for the flyer. 10.     The History Museum on the Square hosts a monthly Youth Book Club to engage youth in books. Click here for more information. The next book club meeting will discuss the novel Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Joseph Bruchac. The novel tells the fictional story of Ned Begay, a sixteen-year-old Navajo boy, and his experiences as a code talker during the war. The discussion will meet virtually on October 24th at 2:00 pm.
